FOR ELEANOR’S FINAL DOSE.
The four words silenced the entire terminal.
Dr. Preston lay facedown on the floor with two officers holding his arms behind his back.
Medicine bottles were scattered around him.
Chloe was crying.
Ryan stared at the syringe as if it had betrayed him.
I stared at my son.
“Final dose,” I whispered. “You weren’t planning to take me home.”
“Mom, I didn’t know that was in his bag.”
“You brought him here.”
“Because you needed an examination!”
“The court had already cancelled the order.”
“I didn’t know that when we left Miami.”
“Then why did Dr. Preston bring a loaded syringe?”
Ryan looked at his attorney.
But his attorney was thousands of miles away.
There was nobody left to tell him which lie to use.
Dr. Preston began shouting.
“That is not mine!”
The officer lifted the bag.
“Your name is stitched on it.”
“Someone planted the syringe.”
“Who?”
He pointed at Ryan.
