For several seconds, nobody in my kitchen spoke.
Daniel’s words seemed to hang in the air.
Six months ago.
Jessica and Susan.
Liam’s trust statement.
“How quickly he could access the money after marriage.”
Liam was the first to react.
“What exactly did they ask you?”
Daniel exhaled slowly through the phone.
“They wanted to know whether the trust became jointly accessible once you were married.”
Liam’s face changed.
“And what did you tell them?”
“That it did not.”
A pause.

“I told them the trust remained solely yours unless you voluntarily transferred assets, changed ownership, or used the funds to purchase jointly titled property.”
Maya whispered,
“Oh my God.”
I leaned closer to the phone.
“Why are you telling us this now?”
Daniel was quiet for a moment.
“Because I thought Susan had discussed this with Liam.”
“I didn’t know any of it,” Liam said.
“That became clear this morning.”
“How?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then said,
“Jessica called me.”
Liam gripped the edge of the counter.
